* * * SPEAKER EVENT * * * with Prof. Dr. Wendy Shaw
* * * * * You would think Muslims worship headscarves: how trying to «save brown women» hurts us all * * * * *
Wendy Shaw is Professor for Art History of Islamic Cultures at the Freie University Berlin. Prof. Shaw works on the intersection between modernity, colonialism, postcoloniality, philosophy and art in the Islamic world through museums, art historiography, archaeology, religion, film, photography and contemporary artistic production. Her work features a regional emphasis on the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Turkey within comparative perspectives with other regions of the global south and Islamic majority cultural legacies.
This event will be a special opportunity to hear Prof. Shaw talk about intersectional feminism and where the current movements fail to give voice to «brown women» especially those who wear the veil.
All are welcome. There is no entrance fee, only we do encourage people to buy drinks at the bar hosting the event. There will be an opportunity after the talk for plenty of questions and we hope a very dynamic discussion.
This event is hosted by Femme Talk — a space in Berlin to talk about women, contemporary politics, women in contemporary politics, and contemporary politics about women.
